Extra Credit can be granted for the assignments below.

These assignments can each bring you a maximum of 3 points added to your course grade (out of 100 total points), but full marks are not automatically granted; these papers are graded like any other.

You can do as many as three of these assignments.

Each item from the assignments below must be 300 words, give or take 10%, must be typed double spaced, and if it gives any sources other than the textbook, these sources must be cited in MLA format (for quotes from the textbook, just give the page number).

If you have another idea other than those listed below, you may propose it to the instructor.

These assignments shall be accepted up to and including May 1, 2015 but not thereafter.



1. Give a research summary of what Einstein thought about God.

2. Quoting one or two of the philosophers or schools of philosophy studied so far, explain why one's personal problems should not become the focus of one's life.

3. Give a research summary of what a quantum physicist wrote about philosophical issues. Examples: Planck, Heisenberg, Schrodinger.

4. Why do beings exist rather than not exist? Include you, yourself, as a being that exists. Remember, this is philosophy, not religion.

5. How can Socrates' ethics be applied to a life and death decision?

6. How can philosophical ideas be applied to a problem like personal procrastination?

7. How can ideas from this course help you develop a better self-image?

8. How can three philosophers help you understand art? (See Aesthetics tab)

9. See the list of Women Philosophers on Quotes, Notes and More, and research what one of them taught about (a) existence and metaphysics, or (2) social pressure, or (3) gender discrimination, or (4) ethics.
